GOBARdhan scheme is a game changer for India’s CBG Industry

India has significant potential for CBG production, with ~472 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) of raw materials available, comprising animal wastes, agricultural residue, municipal solid waste (MSW), etc. Around 62 MMTPA of CBG can be produced from these raw materials. Napier grass is also emerging as a sustainable raw material for CBG production, with six harvest cycles annually (a yield of 180-200 tonnes per acre per year).

  • The revised GOBARdhan scheme approved by the Government of India (GoI) on August 06, 2026, with detailed guidelines issued on September 15, 2026, has an outlay of Rs. 23,731 crore over from FY2027 to FY2036.
  • It consolidates existing schemes such as SATAT, DPI, MDA etc. and provides guaranteed offtake and remunerative prices along with capital assistance and subsidies for pipeline development, thereby creating a viable CBG ecosystem.
